Hiking

Taveuni / Viti Levu / Yasawa Islands

Let us share a secret with you: the South Pacific island nation is a hiker’s heaven! Majestic waterfalls cascading into natural pools, secret beaches best reached on foot, lush rainforest with vibrant birdlife, rugged coastlines and views that stretch all the way to the horizon.

Hiking in Fiji can be challenging but is in general very safe. Many resorts offer guided hiking tours as day trips (recommended), and there are even trails that can be explored independently, If you do plan to trek on your own, ensure the trail doesn’t cut through a village. If it does, be sure to pack a gift (sevusevu) like kava before asking for permission to explore the area.

There are no dangerous snakes, spiders or mammals on the trails. Just make sure to bring some mosquito repellent, sun protection and maybe a light rain jacket.

Here are just some of the most incredible hikes through rainforests, to waterfalls and deserted beaches that Fiji has to offer:

Lavena Coastal Walk, Taveuni

There’s no doubt. The Lavena Coastal Walk is the best coastal hike in Fiji. The easy round-trip hike takes 4-5 hours and leads you along Taveuni’s volcanic coastline. This hike is one of the most scenic and varied hikes in Fiji. You’ll discover white sandy beaches as well as ash grey coves, mixed with a few creek crossings and villages along the way. Past lush tropical fauna and rocky coastline, the path finally leads to a freshwater pool fed by picturesque waterfalls. During high tide, it’s possible to take a boat ride back to the trailhead, halving the time, distance and effort needed for the round trip. This hike is one of the Fiji experiences that shouldn’t be missed when staying on Taveuni.

Mount Batilamu, Viti Levu

A moderate 5-6 hours round-trip hike leads you to the one of the biggest mountain peaks in Fiji - Viti Levu’s Mount Batilamu in Koroyanitu National Heritage Park. Hikers can trek to the top of Mount Batilamu with or without a guide, and will be rewarded with one of the best views of the islands. On a clear day, you’ll even catch views that span all the way to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands.

Talanoa Treks Highland Hikes, Viti Levu

Talanoa Treks - Fiji’s only dedicated hiking company - takes you on this multi-day hiking adventure through Viti Levu’s highlands. The trek is moderate to hard and takes 4 days. If you feel up for a challenge you will be rewarded with an unforgettable experience, including overnight stays in several different Fijian villages, that offer an incredible opportunity to learn about Fijian culture through food and warm hospitality. The treks lead through grasslands, lush forests, along streams and to waterfalls.

Tavoro Falls (Bouma Falls), Taveuni

The easy to moderate 3 -4 hour hike to Tavoro Falls (Bouma Falls) on Taveuni is the best hikes for scenic waterfalls in Fiji. Bouma National Heritage Park is home to these 3 amazing waterfalls. The first (and tallest) of them, Tavoro Falls is reached via a flat and easy 10-minute walk along a manicured path. The swimming hole is ideal for young families or travelers not comfortable with steep climbs. The other waterfalls in the park require a trek up a steep and sometimes slippery path across a stream and into the forest. But don’t you worry — the rewarding views of Taveuni’s scenic coastline from the trail make up for it.

Yasawa Island Walks & Hikes

The volcanic island chain of the Yaswas Islands offers an array of landscapes to explore. You’ll discover breathtaking hilltop views, golden grasslands, tropical jungle, rock pools and beaches along the walking trails of the Yasawas. Due to the small size of the individual island, most resorts offer only 1 or 2 local hikes as day trips from the resort. Some trails require a guide, while others are easy to be explored on your own.
